UPDATED: September 18, 2017
Hello, Mike here again, and today I am going to share with you some valuable information.
As you may know, I have done my fair share of walking on this earth, and I have tried out more shoes than small country.
My goal today is to share with you the top 3 best walking shoes for men, because I know how difficult it can be to find an excellent pair of walking shoes.
In usual fashion, I will be revealing a shoe for smaller budgets, medium, and larger budgets, plus pointing out my all time favorite mens walking shoe.
First, I want to share with you some extremely important information about walking shoes, and how important it is to purchase shoes that are specifically engineered for walking, rather than just grabbing any pair of athletic shoes of the shelf.
The amount of technical differentiation that is infiltrating the footwear market is confusing enough; just what is the difference supposed to be between a walking shoe and a running shoe?
Why should a person buy two pairs of shoes when they can make do with just one?
So, how the heck are you supposed to know which shoes are the best walking shoes? If you have ever asked any of those questions, or have pondered over then you need to read on!
The truth is that there are tons of different walking shoes, there are walking shoes for wide feet, there are walking sandals for the warmer months, there are walking shoes plantar faciitis if you suffer from that condition, and the list goes on and on …
The Evolution Of The Walking Shoe
First off, know that there really is a difference between running shoes and walking shoes.
This is not just a clever marketing ploy trying to create demand out of thin air. Walking shoes have evolved from a category what the baby boomers have come to know as “sneakers”.
In fact before 1986, you couldn’t even find a walking shoe in a store.
The best you could hope for were comfort shoes or rubber soled canvas shoes (aka sneakers). Back then you couldn’t even tell them as walking shoes, they looked more like orthopedic footwear that you won’t put on if your life depended on it.
However, in the years that followed, newer technical innovations were incorporated into them which allowed them to become better specifically for walking.
The difference between walking and running shoes is found in the difference between the two activities that they aid in.
Running is lot more strenuous than walking; a runner hits the ground with about 3 times his body weight, while walkers will hit the ground with about 1.5 times their body weight.
Consequently, running shoes need to be far more heavily padded and cushioned than walking shoes, which in turn trade heavy cushioning materials for light weight.
Why Having A Walking Shoe Matters
Running also has a different gait from walking in many ways; runners tend to land flat on their foot, while walkers will achieve a better heel to toe transition as they tend to move at a slower pace.
Walkers and joggers will always have one foot on the ground; runners can have both feet off at the same time.
Walking shoes for men therefore are designed specifically to help them walk as efficiently as possible.
The best men’s walking shoes…
- are light in weight, have enough cushioning under the heel,
- are flexible; meaning you can bend and flex the shoe in the forefoot region.
- have low heel; the best walking shoes will have a drop of less than 10 mm or less.
- have no flare; this means that walking shoes have heels that angle inwards from the heel to the ground. This is specifically designed to assist the walker as they hit the ground with their heel and transition to the toe.
Walking shoes therefore are a necessary part of your footwear inventory, especially since they are a lot cheaper than running shoes.

Time to Reveal The Top 3 Walking Shoes for Men
Asics Gel Tech Walker Neo 4: (Medium Budget)
I am going to start off with my favorite walking shoe to date, the Asics Walker Neo 4 which is the successor to the extremely popular Walker Neo 3.
The upgrade is fantastic, and the Japanese footwear giant continues to impress with their Gel Tech Walker Neo 4.
The Gel series of shoes from Asics are already a major hit in the market, in fact there seems to be no stopping the trend.
First off, the Asics Gel Walker departs from the strange trend that has gripped the walking shoe market these days, i.e. it actually make an attempt at looking aesthetically pleasing.
This particular walking shoe from Asics is designed for superior support, so it offers a lot more support than other shoes out there.
The Gel system it uses provides an unparalleled level of comfort that is simply not felt in other shoes!
Here are some of the top features that the Gel Tech Walker Neo 4 offers:
- Synthetic mesh upper: Provides adequate breath-ability while keeping the overall weight down. The upper also features dynamic overlays that adapt to your gait.
- Impact Guidance System (I.G.S.) – Which does a great job of enhancing your foots natural gait.
- Solyte Midsole – A very light midsole that you will immediately notice provides great cushioning.
- Rearfoot and forefoot GEL Cushioning systems – Do an excellent job of absorbing shock during impact and allows for free movement of your feet through all phase of the gait cycle.
- Asics Biomorphic fit technology: This technology utilizes high quality adaptive materials to provide a great fit.
- A reinforced toe cap: For enhanced durability.
Not only are these wicked comfortable to put on, but also they don’t bite your wallet as hard as some of the other walking shoes for men out there will.
At a modest price, you cannot go wrong with this pair of mens walking shoes.
On top of that, the support this shoe gives you is unbelievable, and is one of the first things I noticed after putting them on.
Saucony Grid Omni Walker: (Smaller Budget)
The reviews of this walking shoe are extremely positive, as you will see below, receiving almost entirely all 5 star reviews.
Coming with a carbon rubber sole for extended durability, the Grid Omni Walker from Saucony is one of the most comfortable walking shoes for men that you can find in the market today.
The shoe is designed to provide excellent support without becoming too heavy, and Saucony has done a fabulous job at it.
Comfortable and plush to put on, the shoe is easy to wear from the first time you put it on and is great for long walks.
The shoe’s crash pads in the heels work perfectly and provide plenty of cushioning, making it one of the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn.
The biggest feature that the Grid Walker sports is the advancements in stability.
This is the first Saucony offering that offers stability from the sole rather than from the sides and the external parts.
The shoe’s rear foot grid system is designed using Hytrel filaments and gives the heel plenty of support, cushioning, and stability because this technology centers the heel on impact.
Saucony also has installed carbon-rubber compounds throughout the mid foot region giving it unsurpassed support.
Simply put, the shoe stays with you regardless of your motion and keeps your gait extremely stable, and the toebox is very anatomically friendly and comfortable.
In keeping with its tradition of providing incremental updates in every new shoe that they launch, Saucony has added some of their newest features to the Omni Walker as well.
The following are some of the more prominent features that the Omni Walker sports:
- Leather and synthetic construction: Makes the shoe light while keeping it supportive, comfortable, flexible, and strong.
- Rubber soles: For unsurpassed traction.
- Forefoot HRC: Which is a EVA/rubber compound that is responsive throughout the entire gait cycle and provides great cushioning through the late gait stages.
- Midfoot Support Bridge – Provides you with excellent midfoot support throughout the gait cycle.
- Walk Trac outsoles: Designed to provide a smooth transition.
The shoe is one of the best mens walking shoes to ever hit the market, period!
The features that this shoe offers are some of the best that I have ever seen in a walking shoe, and certainly at its price point, which is insanely low for what you get in this shoe.
The shoe can be purchased for a very fair price and given the plethora of positive reviews you can be rest assured of a great buy!
New Balance M990v3: (Larger Budget)
The 990v3 from New Balance is designed keeping people who are suffering from back, foot or knee problems.
The amount of cushioning that New Balance has added in the 990v3 makes it one of the most comfortable walking shoes for men.
The shoe is designed around Single Density Polyurethane that provides exceedingly comfortable cushioning. The top part of the shoe uses suede which can easily adapt to a variety of different foot shapes.
New Balance has installed breathable mesh in the upper of the 990v3 giving them exceptional breath-ability, while also reducing the overall weight of the shoe.
Another new addition is the plush tongue and collar that is designed to keep your heels in place and provide a comfortable stride.
Consider the following features that the New Balance 990v3 offers:
- Abzorb cushioning: For some of the best shock absorption in the mid foot region, abzorbs cushioning technology is an excellent feature.
- Encap midsole: For superior support and cushioning under the heel.
- Ndurance rubber outsoles: reinforced rubber for exceptional durability.
The New Balance 990v3 isn’t a dedicated walking shoe for men.
Rather it is more of a running shoe, however it fits the descriptions required for a walking shoe as well, and I can tell you is actually perfect for a daily walking routine.
If you have some extra cash laying around, then this shoe is a must have.
It is a great multi-purpose shoe that will be with you for a long time.
